****Shallow Water Certificate Course****NEW SYLLABUS

Training Provider Vertas Swimming
Event Description This 3.5 hour course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to those that undertake a teaching and/or lifesaving role with direct responsibility for a group of pupils swimming in shallow water (less than 1.2 metres). Courses are organised by Suffolk Norse Ltd on behalf of Suffolk County Council.

The course, in 4 parts, covers:

Part 1 - safe practice

Part 2 - recovery and removal of casualties from water

Part 3 - basic paediatric life support

Part 4 - a practical water test of the candidates ability to effect the rescue of a simulated unconscious casualty from the pool floor (1.2 metres) and to recover them to poolside. This test will be undertaken and assessed during the course.

Participants must attend for the full 3.5 hour duration, be prepared to enter the water and complete both practical tasks.
Training Objectives This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to those that undertake a teaching and/or lifesaving role with direct responsibility for a group of pupils swimming in shallow water (less than 1.2 metres).

It will provide:
- up to date knowledge of basic paediatric life support
- ability to deal with emergencies that may arise when teaching swimming in shallow water.

Successful candidates will be able to act as lifesaver in water with a depth of 1.2 metres or less.

The award is valid for 24 months.

Dress Code Course members should be aware that this is a practical course involving reaching and throwing rescues, recovery of manikins from the pool floor, lifting, moving and turning others both in the water and on land. Delegates should wear appropriate casual poolside clothing and bring with them: * swimwear * towel/warm clothing * shorts and t-shirt or similar that can be worn in the water *whistle *poolside footwear *cold drinks/snacks
